Greatfields School, Barking

project overview

Parmarbrook have been appointed by Mid Group to design the new £40 million Greatfields School in East London. The 3FE primary school is part of zone one completed in December 2017 with further zones due for completion for the September 2019 school intake.

Located in the former Gascoigne Estate in Barking centre, the development forms part of the wider Allies & Morrison-designed Weavers Quarter masterplan, and includes a 700-pupil primary school and 1,800-pupil secondary school. The site is located at the heart of a dense urban area and high profile regeneration scheme with significance to the public realm.

Zone 1 of the project was delivered using a hybrid SIP and pre-cast concrete plank solution that was both very quick and very efficient. The project has been nominated for many awards since completion, including offsite project of the year.

Zone 2 involves the remediation of a brown field site, followed by the construction of a 15,000m2 new secondary school. The school sits at the heart of the redevelopment of the existing Gascoigne Estate. The new school sits amongst 1,800 new homes, that are undergoing a phased construction. The school design has been developed to ensure it complements the architecture and massing of the new masterplan.

The scheme is due for completion in 2020.
